a drain pipe exiting flush to the side of a building will eventually leave a stain on the building below the pipe.
in snowy environments, placing entryways under a bridge below the second story reduces tracking in of snow and muck (but increases exposed surface area and costs of internal temperature control?). also, doors that close slowly avoid smacking into skis or snowboards as people make their way through the entryway.
would increased productivity from working in pleasant buildings offset the cost savings of typical office designs? people voluntarily visit coffee shops. would workspaces designed like coffee shops or living rooms make employees happier?
